There has been an increasing interest in using Immunoglobulin Y (IgY) antibodies as an alternative to “classical” antimicrobials. Unlike traditional antibiotics, they can be utilized on a continual basis without leading to the development of resistance. The veterinary IgY antibody market is growing because of the demand for minimal antibiotic use in animal production. IgY antibodies are not as strong as antibiotics for treating infections, but they work well as preventative agents and are natural, nontoxic, and easy to produce. They can be administered orally and are well tolerated, even by young animals.

Arthritic conditions afflict millions of people worldwide, negatively affecting their physical and mental health and the quality of their lives. Conventional therapeutic modalities frequently provide relief to patients, but it is increasingly evident that other regimens, including nutritional ones, may be beneficial. A drink mix fortified with egg powder derived from specially vaccinated hens (“immune egg”) was studied for its ability to modulate symptoms in 13 patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or psoriatic arthritis.

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for almost half of all deaths. Animal studies have suggested that the daily addition of “hyperimmune egg” to one’s diet might reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Military personnel with initial total cholesterol levels higher than 180 mg/dl were randomly enrolled in a 26-week double-blind study of a drink containing a hyperimmune egg protein.

Powdered immune egg was given by oral bolus doses for two days in order to evaluate the potential for inhibition of castor oil-induced diarrhea in the mouse. Castor oil was administered after the second dose of powdered immune egg and the response was quantified by grading the consistency of the stool at 2, 4, and 6 hours.

The avian egg contains all the necessary nutrients and growth factors required for the developing embryo, including antibodies that are transported from the blood of the hen into the egg yolk to provide immunity to the chick. Since the discovery of egg yolk antibodies, now called immunoglobulin Y (IgY), in the late 1800s, this process has been harnessed to produce antigen-specific yolk antibodies for the numerous applications in the medical and research fields, including in areas such as diagnostics and proteomics.
